When the Water Silently Noises

GanjoThe idea for the film is by Gjoko Popovski - Ganjo. As a sport photographer and cameraman, in 1963 he encountered cycling during the filming of the race through Yugoslavia that went from Skopje to Sarajevo. Looking at the difficulties that the cyclists go trough the number of changes in weather conditions and road: rain, wind, sun, uphill, without water, without food… he admired their effort and came to a conclusion that sport cycling comes before the marathon in its difficulty.

PressIn 1974 Ganjo filmed the International Cycling Race through Yugoslavia. The race started from Skopje and ended in Ljubljana, while Ganjo followed the cyclists constantly on a motorbike with the camera in his hand.

He recalls that whils they were passing the Adriatic coast, the cyclists stopped to have a swim and have a refreshment from the hot weather, but it was against the rules and they got penalties for each swim. Still, that would not stop them to go into the sea.

The filmed material was brought in Skopje where Ganjo, after several attempts with different directors, finally meets Kole Angelovski and agrees to make a documentary film out of that material.
Inserts from this first documentary film have been shown on the Macedonian Radio and Television a number of times.

The film goes trough a revision in cooperation with Vardar Film in order to be sent for the Belgrade Documentary Festival in 1979. And it makes a great success, being screened in a full theater of the House of the Union.

The documentary film „When the Water Silently Noises“ remains a timeless witness to the difficulties that the cyclists go trough and an inspiration to ride a bicycle.
